Just what the doctor ordered! This season's underdog medical family comedy starring Ken Jeong has received a full, 22 episode season order at ABC. The order makes Dr. Ken the first, and so far only, new comedy for the 2015-16 season to receive the coveted back 9 order.
The series flew largely undetected leading up the new season with many critics diagnosing the freshman comedy to be one of the first casualties of the new season. The show is joint project from Sony Pictures TV and ABC Studies and has achieved surprisingly stable ratings in it's Friday night death slot. For the past two appointment, the show has held a 1.3 Live+Same Day rating among Adults 18-49, holding on to 100% of it's Last Man Standing lead in.
Dr. Ken has also delivered the strongest follow-up appointment ratings for a post-Last Man Standing show. The show's strong retention has improved the 8:30 slot by 25% year-to-year to rate as ABC's top rated comedy in the time period in three years. On average, Dr. Ken is drawing 6.6 million viewers and 1.5 among adults 18-49. In past seasons to date, ABC has placed a number of different comedies in the post-LMS slot to little success. Malibu Country (2012-13), The Neighbours (2013-14) and Cristela (2014-15) all achieved only one season behind LMS.
ABC also has mid-season single-camera comedy Uncle Buck which was set to air next year in the 8:30 slot. It is unclear whether ABC will stick to their original plans.
Dr. Ken joins freshman dramas Blindspot (NBC) and Quantico (ABC) in receiving a full season order.
Dr. Ken stars Ken Jeong as a doctor with an irreverent bedside manner at an HMO clinic.
